You CAN break free from the schooling matrix.
Ben Franklin defies conventional schooling wisdom. You can too.
An excellent example of an independently educated individual is Ben Franklin. Dropping out of grammar school at 10 years old, Ben later went to work for his brother in the printing press industry. Ben mentions that he worked 12 hour days, and this meant he could build up his reputation as an industrious and competent individual. And he was only 12 years old! But in his spare time he put himself through an independent education of daunting scope. Studying for only 2 hours day in his spare time he developed a savvy for good literature, as well as mastery of the active literacies (an old idea that elite families well understood opened doors of opportunity). Ben went on to become a nation-builder, as well as the discoverer of electricity. Maybe such wild spirits like Ben aren’t good for economic stability.
Ben is an example of what is possible with rigorous self-direction. It’s time you break free from the schooling matrix and set-up your own independent education.
The uncomfortable reality.
When I graduated high school I was gripped with a daunting thought. ‘I have learned nothing from school of any lasting or significant value for life in the real world.’ (with the exception of one teacher, but he went off script). I wanted to know why twelve years of my life availed to so little. Was I responsible? But more importantly, what could I do about it?
The answer to my quest for understanding was far from what I expected. The discovery was a confrontation with an uncomfortable reality. Unlike the story I had been told about why I go to school, which was usually about getting a good job, the unsettling truth is the modern school system was designed to make us obedient employees and reliable consumers. After confronting this realisation I was unwilling to live according to my managerial-designed destiny. I wanted to write my own script. Do you?
A glimpse at the interests behind modern schooling.
After graduation, I chewed through the history books to uncover how I ended up with my schooling. Despite the ominous sound that a school system was designed to create obedient individuals, it is far from conspiratorial. Rather, school is the natural unfoldment of certain political, economic, and military interests during the past two centuries.
Here’s a few examples:
The military logic of Prussia.
Prussia’s defeat to the hands of Napoleon called for the nationalisation of the school system. Obedient soldiers, not independent thinkers, was the national policy.
The spirit of the industrial revolution.
The new economy of factories required a populace capable of obeying orders and the ringing of bells, adhering to detailed time schedules, and working the machines. Entrepreneurial individuals, however, were antithetical to the new program.
Perpetuation of the British class system.
Initially the British aristocracy disliked the idea of democratising education. Well-read individuals might disturb the social order. But that began to change as the Anglican priest Andrew Bell brought back ideas from India on how to maintain the Caste System. It’s also noteworthy that the industrial revolution began here in Britain - nothing of small import.
The demands of the modern corporate economy.
Mass-production and large-scale investments need guaranteed markets. They also require a horde of viable employees (not to be mistaken with independent business owners) and reliable consumers. Is it any wonder that the early industrial magnates played a large role in the formation of compulsory education?
The harsh reality is that a real education was never on offer through our school systems. Continue reading to uncover more of this vital story because you can triumph over the forces desiring you to be a mere economic function.
You felt something was wrong.
You were right.
‘We want one class of persons to have a liberal education, and we want another class of persons, a very much larger class, of necessity, in every society, to forego the privileges of a liberal education and fit themselves to perform specific difficult manual tasks.’
Woodrow Wilson, former president of the U.S.A
